Culture and tradition...

Our village museum is always worth a visit. Here you find all the objects which were used in the past. The old times revive as you walk through the different rooms and you get to know old tools, crafts and customs.

There are many interesting things to tell about the chapel of St. Jakob auf Kastelaz with its frescos. In 1214 the peasants of Tramin, by explicit permission of the bishop of Trient, were allowed to build a defence castle above the centre of the village, to protect themselves and their wine from the robber barons. The castle was therefore owned by the inhabitants of the village of Tramin, an extremely rare thing at that time. The bishop’s rivals, the princes of Tyrol were not pleased at all with that and in the late 13th century the castle was completely destroyed. Later, on the ruins of the castle the chapel of St. Jakob was built. In 1441 AD the interior walls were decorated with gothic frescos. What makes them exceptionally interesting is that in addition to the Christian figures, some frescos show a bestiary, partly human and partly fantastic animal figures.

The Egetmann parade, one of the most traditional carnival parades in South Tyrol, is a really extraordinary event. Only traditional carnival figures are allowed, such as the Schnappviecher (literally snapping beast) and the washerwomen, and only men can take part in the parade.
